Spring Style with Brooks Brothers

Oh spring.. it feels like every time we get a little sense of it here in New York, Mother Nature swoops in and says "Just kidding! Here's some more snow. ;)". But never the less, it is technically spring and I'm determined to embrace the new season, even if Mother Nature wont! Brooks Brothers, one of my favorite brands for classic, preppy clothing, was extremely kind enough to send me three of their new arrivals for spring to style for you all.  I know you're going to love them!

 I'm absolutely in love with everything! The gingham dress is fitted and petite, so it's very flattering on my 5'1" frame. Plus, it's so precious with its gingham pattern and bow tie waste. The blue top and floral pants are also perfection. The pants are long for me, which is typical unless I buy petite pants, but can be folded under (like I did for these pictures) or hemmed. They're perfect for spring weather. And this shirt? I want it in so many more colors! It is so, so comfortable and soft and the bateau neckline is my favorite part. I couldn't be happier with the quality and the fit of these pieces. As usual, Brooks Brothers doesn't disappoint!

How to Style a Sweater Dress - 4 Different Ways!

It doesn't matter what season it is, if I'm looking for an easy outfit, I'll always look to see what dresses I own. And when it's winter, I'm obsessed with finding sweater dresses, because they're really the best of both worlds- comfort and ease. The only difficulty with dresses is styling them so it doesn't feel like you're wearing the same outfit every time you re-wear one of them. So, I've figured out a few different ways to style a sweater dress to help solve that issue! (All of the items I'm wearing will be linked at the bottom of this post.)


A simple cashmere scarf and pumps. A long scarf of contrasting color adds just the right touch to this dress. The scarf plus the heels also help elongate my frame and prevent the dress from looking unflattering, since it's a bit too long and unfitted on me to wear by itself. These leopard patterned heels also add just the right amount of character to the outfit. It's simple and chic, and perfect for dressy occasions. 



A skinny belt and loafers. Need a solution to a dress that's not fitted and a touch too long? Add a belt! And when I added a belt to this dress, I could then get away with wearing flat shoes. The belt and loafers make this outfit casual and cute, and the headband also adds a fun pop of pattern and youth. It's the perfect outfit for lunch or any daytime activity.



A vest and otk boots. Over-the-knee boots have been trending for the past two years, and I'm loving it! They elongate your legs and I've yet to see anyone who they don't look flattering on. The sweater dress alone with the boots still needed something extra though, and this vest worked perfectly. It not only adds a bit of color and texture to this outfit, but it also helps add shape since it's just the right length and slightly fitted. This outfit is perfect for nights out.




A sweater and riding boots. A sweater over a sweater? Yes, definitely! Layering is not only great for staying warm but it's also an easy way to make an outfit more unique. This casual outfit would be perfect for relaxed days out about town or cozy evenings.

Transition into Fall

Even though it still feels like summer, I'm determined to start dressing for fall. The trick to doing so? Light (very light) layers and darker, toned down, neutral colors. This outfit was perfect for a day shopping in Cold Spring Harbor, which is an adorable and beautiful little hamlet in Huntington, on the North Shore of Long Island.







Our first stop was Heritage Candle & Home, which is a charming little store with some home decor and lots of candle items. Now, I've told myself that I can not buy anything from now on that I do not need.. But I did that anyway. I bought four little candles by Bridgewater Candle Company; one called "Sweet Grace", one called "Orange Vanilla", and two of the one called "Open Road", and they smell amazing, so I don't regret it!
Our next stop was a darling little bakery called Sweetie Pies, where we grabbed coffee and a bite to eat. I got the chocolate chip scone (delicious) and an iced coffee, because I definitely did not need a hot beverage to make me any warmer than I already was at this point. 

A little warm weather wont stop me from transitioning into my fall wardrobe. 
This cardigan is very lightweight. I bought it last year from Lands' End and I can't seem to find a similar one anywhere online unfortunately. (If any brands are listening, we need more preppy cardigans with striped trim like this one!) 
I wore it over a sleeveless knit shell from Ann Taylor Loft. I found a similar one here from Talbots. Sleeveless sweater/knit tops are perfect for this time of year.
To match the navy stripes on my cardigan, I wore my navy J. Crew Gigi pants. I bought these last year around Christmas and I love them. (They feel like leggings!) Currently their sizing is extremely limited, but I'm hoping and almost positive they'll be restocking them when it gets colder outside.
My ballet flats are by Banana Republic. You can find similar ones here. Unfortunately they destroyed my ankles after about 15 minutes of wearing them. Does anyone else struggle with this? The only flats that have never given me blisters are from New Look. No other ballet flats compare. The only reason I didn't wear them this day was because they're stored away with my fall and winter clothes, which, due to the warm weather, we haven't taken out of storage yet.
My purse is from Kate Spade (the Cedar Street Maise is no longer available, but the Cameron Street Lottie looks very similar); my headband is by Pappagallo; my watch is from Timex; my bangle is Hampton Ivy; my ring is Hampton Ivy; and my phone case is a Hampton Ivy & Culley Committee collaboration!

Fall has to be my favorite season. I love every season, but fall is really the only one that I never want to end. The colors, the layering, the coziness, the food, the scents- everything about it is just perfect. So even though it's still a little warm outside, I'm in full fall mode anyway.

Chilly Summer Evenings

"What's with the turtlenecks? It's the middle of summer."
"I like them, I've always liked them, and I'm just a turtleneck kind of gal."

If you know where those lines are from, you're amazing! But really, there's something about a turtleneck sweater that makes me feel put together and comfortable, no matter what season it is. Believe it or not, they aren't uncomfortable to wear in the summer, as long as you wear them during the right time of day and it's not too hot or humid outside. If you find the weather is a little chillier than usual or you know you'll be sitting in the shade somewhere, a summer turtleneck is the perfect top to wear. Some people may give you a perplexed look, but style is after all personal, and not everything is going to be everyone's cup of tea. So, wear what you like!

My inspiration behind this outfit was a mix of Diane Keaton from Something's Gotta Give, which is my second favorite summer movie (Jaws is number one), and Jackie Kennedy. It's a simple and modest outfit that is just as classic today as it would have been 50 years ago. That's a huge reason behind why I love neutrals and simple designs; they'll always be in style. Don't get me wrong, I love some bright and fun patterned pieces as well and have quite a few of them. But to me, the definition of preppy style is classic clothing you can wear for years and years and even pass down to younger siblings, family members, or children. It's mature and effortless, while still looking completely put together.
